The Creatures of the Night tour were also the bands 10th anniversary, which was
basically also the theme for the outfits. At least for the only two members left from the
original line-up. Ace were touring with the band on a promotion tour through Europe in
November 1982, but by the time the Creatures-tour started, just days before New
Year, Ace was no longer in the band. He had been substituted by session-player Vincent
Cusano, now known as Vinnie Vincent.
Paul's Creatures
costume was a direct progression from his The Elder costume! The first version is
seen here on photos A to E, and only appears in a very few pictures, from an early photo
session and is rarely seen. As you can see Paul kept the tights and belt from the last
version of his The Elder costume.
The choker (detail in photo B) was only used for this photo shoot, and were a leather
choker with three rows of round studs.
Also only used for this photo shoot was the cuffs seen in photo C and D. They were also
made from black leather and had designs in various sized round studs. Photo D shows the
underside of the cuff.
The boots used here also resembled the last The Elder boots. They were wrapped with
studded leather straps, but these looked like the Love Gun boots without the
chains, and not the pirate style boots used with the previous outfit.
The belt seen in photo F was sold at the KISS Auction in 2000, and according to the
catalogue this was used with a version of the Creatures costume. I have not yet seen any
pictures of this (you don't have to look very carefully to see it's not the same as the
one seen in photo A).
The second version of Paul's Creatures outfit recalled his
1974 costume, being just a pair of tights, with a studded belt around the waist.
On picture G you can see a short jacket, very similar to the jacket from the Love Gun
outfit. This was used for a few photo shoots, but I don't think it was used much aside
from that.
Picture H shows the first version of the rhinestone covered vest or top, that Paul wore
from time to time during this period. Again very similar to the vest worn on the Love
Gun/Alive II tours.
Picture I shows the belt around Paul's waist, that had a star made of flat, diamond shaped
studs.
The boots (photo J and K) were covered with a loose
piece of black cloth, with a rhinestone covered leather piece around the ankle. The
covering was detachable (see picture K, which is the same boot, without the covering). The
platforms and heels also had rows of rhinestones (best seen on picture K).
Picture L is a view of the costume from behind. It would seem that it didn't matter how
Paul put the top on... it's almost identical on both front and back!
Paul also wore some studded armbands (picture M) with the costume. Along the way a
rhinestone covered glove was added to the armband (picture N).
Pictures O to Q shows the costume, that were used for the tour.
Picture O is a close-up of the new top. It is very similar to the first version,
but the rhinestones is attached in a slightly different pattern on this version. You'll
have to compare the two to see the difference, though!
Picture P shows the belt and tights in detail. Note the studded, silver pattern down the
thighs! Paul briefly wore a similar patterned jacket in 1978 (check it out in the 1977
section.) This is very amusing, because the belt used here, were also used with that
costume in 1978!! Picture Q shows the boots used with this costume. Also very similar to the original
version, but note that a kneepad had now been added to the top of the boot.
Picture R shows a small variation... Paul is seen wearing a button (circled in) saying: I
Love NY! This was possibly for the bands dates in New York.
Picture S shows Paul with something, possibly a scarf, tied to his left thigh (circled
in)... I have no idea what the point in that was supposed to be, but it looks pretty cool,
though!
Paul
was wearing different kinds of neckwear with his 1982-83 costumes. Photo T shows a choker
(also seen in photo G and H), which had two rows of square, flat studs and a single row of
rhinestones in the middle. This was mainly used for the promotion tour in November
1982.
Photo U shows the choker used for part of the U.S. tour, which had four rows of
rhinestones. This was quickly substituted with a chain necklace as seen in photo S, V and
W. In photo W it appears that Paul is wearing no less than two chains!
At the end of the tour Paul stopped wearing the costume top, and started to use some torn
KISS t-shirts instead.
I have seen pictures of two different T-shirts... well, they are actually the same design,
they just vary a bit in color: a dark blue, with KISS in a light blue circle (photo V);
and a pale blue (or perhaps white), with KISS in a pink circle (photo W). At first I
thought it was the same t-shirt, before and after a shit-load of washing, but if you look
at the colors in the KISS logo on the shirt, it's quite clear, that they are different!
Photo X shows another piece of neckwear, this time a brown scarf with orange and white
designs! I have no idea what the reason for this were, nor when this occurred!!
