The Elder 1981/82

KISS wanted a radical change in their image for The Elder, and you will have to admit, that they succeeded in doing just that. Shorter hair, "New Romantics" style costumes, and softer music. Not everybody was happy about the change... most fans hated it, and the band themselves weren't too happy either.
Surprisingly, and even though the outfits were only in use a very few times (a couple of photo shoots, and a few TV appearances), a great deal of changes were made along the way

Paul's first The Elder costume (pictures A to C) looked more or less like a black, plastic sack, with a belt. That wasn't the case, though... it was made from satin! Picture A shows the detachable top, picture B shows the baggy pants!
Picture C shows the first pair of boots worn with this costume: a couple of Adam Ant style pirate boots, with two leather straps on the side with metal buckles (circled in).
Picture D is a detailed look at the belt. It was a black, leather belt with studs, steel-rings, and hanging chains (as you can see on picture E and F).

paul81b.jpg (45903 Byte)Obviously the jacket did occasionally come off (Paul maintained his bare-chested, loverboy look through this period) to reveal a pair of suspenders (picture E).
On picture F, you can see the outfit as it looked soon after (with a look of the backside in picture G). The lower half of the outfit was now, a pair of black tights, with the leather belt around the waist, almost like his 1974 costume. Paul's hair had been shortened, and he wore a purple headband (or bandanna) with his new haircut. The headband might look both red and blue in some pictures (like in picture A), but this is due to problems with the color balance in the magazines where the pictures appeared, before they were scanned! The bandanna were always purple!!!
With the new version of the outfit, Paul often tied the jacket in a knot on the front, as also seen in picture F, where you can also see a necklace with large black "pearls"
, which also belonged to the costume, along with a pair of silver cuffs.
Picture H and I shows the second and third pair of boots. They were made from the same material as the jacket, and ended in a pair of pirate/highway man boots (that's the Adam And The Ants influence again), instead of the usual platform boots. As you can see in picture I, these boots were wrapped with studded leather straps from the top to the foot!
The boots in picture H appeared in the Butterfields KISS Auction catalogue, but I haven't seen any pictures of Paul actually wearing them. I suspect that the boots auctioned away were actually the same boots as in picture I, just with the leather straps removed (they were later used for an early version of the Creatures costume!)
